Hey Oppo….some of you just know me from the front page, but I was once a regular writer here and this community is still one of the best car corners of the internet. I’m now coming to you with an opportunity to make a few bucks with your car knowledge.
Automatch Consulting (that’s me) is teaming up with AutoMotion to make car buying easier. Currently, the AutoMotion app is utilized by car buyers who are doing research on various models and looking for specific inventory within their area. AutoMotion uses both AI and human interactions to locate cars for the buyer.
This is where you come in, you would engage in a text-based conversation with a buyer looking for a specific car. They may say they want a Honda Pilot in Chicago. You do the research and find them some listings. They may come back and say they prefer a red one, you would refine your search accordingly based on the customer’s feedback. There is a little more to the process but that is the general idea.
This is a part-time contractor based gig and with a compensation of $20/hr. For those of you that spend all day looking at cars and helping friends and family source vehicles, this could be a great way to make some side money.
We don’t need a lot of contractors right now, so spots are limited. However, as the business grows and more customers use the system there will likely be more openings in the future.
Here is the official posting -
Title: Car Researcher Needed
AutoMotion, the leader in automotive mobile app technology is adding new car researchers to its platform. If you love using the internet to shop for cars, this may be a fit for you!

If you were only helping people look for mid-2000s BMWs, especially E9Xs, I’d be your person. Since your scope isn’t limited to that, best to look else where.

Dang, not for me but looks like a nice WFH gig.

Might just apply, thanks Tom!

Oh, god, if I weren’t already working 70-80 hours a week on the regular I’d jump on this like Steve Rogers on a grenade. I do so much of this on my free time. Hopefully you’ll have more openings on a second wave.
Edit: yall don’t understand, this is all I’ve ever wanted Tom to offer. My poor timing!

I am not knocking on the idea, but in this day and age, why can’t the buyer check the interwebs themselves?
Being a liaison for someone who will most likely be a pain in the ass isn’t all that appealing. God forbid you find them a lemon. You will never hear the end of it

This is an app for folks that want help with research and finding cars that meet their criteria. Car people usually know their way around the listing sites, but a lot of consumers don’t.

I’m in a similar spot. I’m only good at Bad Idea research.

Had to google the Steve Rogers reference - until then I was picturing Mr. Rogers diving on a grenade thinking “hmm, I guess he was a really nice and benevolent guy...was his first name really Steve?!”.

My not very smart sister refused for a decade to google anything herself, instead just asking people on social media over and over again for things easily googable. She’s still bad at it. That is where people like Oppo could come in.

TBH I think Mr. Fred Rogers would have done it too if he had been there. He seems like the kind of guy who would try to protect the group.

Would this interfere with my 6 to 4 pm regular job?
Thanks for thinking of us Tom!

Thanks Tom I’m looking for something as my current company is circling the drain.

I do this for free for my friends family and colleagues and I am not very successful based on what they end up with eventually.

To hell with it, I sent an email anyway. At least people will know I have some interest in it.

This is what I want to do too! Too bad it would be a 50% pay cut and I love what I’m doing now.
It’s doubly unfair because my currently emplo
yer pays me while I do this anyway.

I’m guessing that a big part of this is “speaking car.” Most car buyers are probably intimidated by the jargon associated with car ads. So your contractor is a sort of liaison? Interpreter?

Oh I absolutely agree - just that if it were him you were speaking about it just seemed like an odd figure of speech :)

Yeah, I have sent many long emails full of links and explanations but they never listen, do they?

I have two sisters. Once I consider very smart. The other I consider not very smart. Guess the difference between the two.

I’d love to see that gif. With Mr Rogers’ face right here.

Same. Most recently was my uncle who wanted a luxury-ish crossover that could tow 5000 pounds. BMW and Audi were discussed (his preference, not mine). After doing a bunch of research and sending him info, he disappeared until a couple of weeks later when he sent me a pick of his new Kia Sorento. I guess he was really more on the “ish” side of luxury.

I immediately think of my mother. When she buys a car, she usually has an idea of what she wants. T hen she buys whatever the salesman convinces her she actually wants.

Just curious but why are you all using humans to do this when you could probably scrape or perform hourly API calls to these car listing sites then index them based on criteria. Then you can set up an Ada chatbot or Salesforce Einstein Bot system to handle the chat. The bot would just query the index based on what the user looking for a car types into the chat?

Is it possible to do this if you aren’t in the US?
